HIPAA standard electronic transactions must be tested before they can actually be conducted between trading partners. Ultimately, each partner must test with every other intended partner to verify connectivity and that partner-specific requirements are met. This burdensome process can be greatly abbreviated if each partner first independently tests basic compliance with a third party testing service. Successful testing can lead to certification by the service of basic compliance for specific transactions. At the option of the entity that initiated the testing, the testing and certification results can be posted on the service's web site or otherwise released to interested trading partners. HIPAA COW is aware of three testing and certification services for HIPAA standard transactions and encourages covered entities to consider their use.
